Coogee Beach Australia
Coogee Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Sydney, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Coogee, which is 5 miles away from the Sydney Business District. Coogee Beach is a component of the City of Randwick in South Wales, and belongs to the Kingsford Smith federal division. Every summer, hundreds of tourists and locals visit the beach to swim, body-board, sun bathe and surf. The suburb is bounded by Clovelly Road, Carrington Road and Rainbow Street.
Coogee Beach derived its named from "koojah," an Aboriginal term that means "stinking place." Coogee is regarded as a stinking town because of the stench of spoiled seaweeds being carried by coastal winds. However this is now far from reality as Coogee has become a top tourist destination in South Australia. The occasional seaweeds that visit the shores are immediately disposed before they start to stink.
Many events and festivals are being held within Coogee Beach every year. The grandest among them is the annual Island Challenge every November, wherein hundreds of participants join 2 kilometer swimming marathon from the beach to a little island called Wedding Cake, and from the island and back to the beach. It is one of the most significant swimming event in Sydney. Another celebration is the Coogee Arts Festival, which happens every February and features theater plays and film showings within the parks near the beach. Coogee residents most of all wait for the Family Fun Day every first Saturday of December, an event being hosted by Chamber of Commerce that features amusement rides, fun booths, games, and stalls within the beach.
